Astrology’s Zodiac Archetypes

By Bernie Ashman and Carmen Turner-Schott, MSW, LISW

Out December 1st from O Books

The Universe has a fascinating way of channeling creativity and stimulating insights into our consciousness. How might this occur? Some things we learn through the influences of others in our life.

Perhaps our parents and other family members inspired us to seek new challenges. We may encounter a teacher, lover  or friend believing in our ability. Sometimes a synchronicity type of experience opens our mind to new possibilities.

As I ventured into astrology many years ago, I discovered the work of the great psychologist, Carl Jung. He wrote about archetypes. You might be wondering where I am going with this. Archetypes belong to what Carl Jung called the collective unconscious.

This is a collection of symbols shared by all of humanity, a product of ancestral experiences from all civilizations since the beginning of time as we know it. The collective unconscious does not develop individually. Then where does it have its origin?

This vast ecosystem of memories is inherited by each of us. The collective unconscious is composed of preexisting forms. These are the archetypes. As we expand in awareness, we will become conscious of these original inherited patterns. Archetypes are essentially the ancient, unconscious source of what we think and believe as people. It is important to remember that each of us has the freedom to express these symbols in whatever way that is needed to evolve and find our own unique sense of fulfillment.

The twelve signs of the zodiac are symbols that guide us to find our own paths in life. It is my own opinion the Astrological signs have their birth in the collective unconscious. Think of them as having archetypal meaning. The universe speaks to us through the astrological signs. Each of us has unique gifts to manifest. The signs help bring out our own ways to find love and creative power.

How are the signs of the zodiac connected to archetypes? Carmen Turner-Schott and I have shown this magical link of the signs and archetypes in our new book, Astrology’s Zodiac Archetypes. We have even shown how past life patterns each of us brings in from previous lifetimes can surface in the current incarnation related to the sign archetypes.

An archetype for the fiery zodiac sign Aries is the hero as we have identified in our book. It fits with the thinking of Carl Jung’s concept of a hero. There is a warrior type of tendency in Aries. A natural competitive spirit can be displayed. Being assertive is a need for someone born under this sign. Each of us at times must show a boldness to accomplish our goals.

If an Aries individual is struggling with a lack of assertion in this life it is possible it could be a repeating theme from a past life. This does not mean it cannot be transformed in an evolutionary way into a more positive expression of this energy. Past life patterns are in our memory but are not always perceived on the conscious level. Any past life pattern can be overcome with patience and determination to embody a more positive creative expression.

It does not matter how many lifetimes we have repeated a past life theme that is holding us back from fulfillment and happiness. If we rise above a past life behavior in the current life it heals all those past lifetimes we were trapped by negative energy!

Let’s look at another zodiac sign, earthy Capricorn. One of Jung’s archetypes is the ruler. A great match for the sign Capricorn. This sign often attracts responsibility. Capricorn is a management-oriented sign. Business instincts run through the DNA of Capricorn.

A past life pattern might be a need to obsessively feel a need to be in control. This can alienate the very people Capricorn wants to grow close to. Trusting that releasing the need to always be in control brings a deep evolutionary growth. Happiness and more fulfilling partnerships are the result. A more flowing life is the result.

The rebel is another Jung archetype, This corresponds to the zodiac air sign Aquarius. Freedom is usually part of the Aquarius desire. Aquarius is known for its independent streak. Beating to its own drum.

A possible past life pattern might be aloofness and hiding emotions behind the intellect. Trusting that expressing feelings is okay can open up evolutionary perceptions. An intuitive side can develop and bring creative success. Being open to sharing an emotional side attracts greater love.

Innocence is another Jung archetype. The watery zodiac sign Pisces is the perfect fit. Pisces can possess a dreamy imagination that guides this sign to creative self-discovery. There is often the Piscean desire to find a soul mate. Finding inspiring work and causes is a heartfelt need.

A past life pattern might be denial. Running away from problems rather than face them can grow frustrating. Realizing you don’t have to be perfect often frees a Pisces. There is evolutionary growth when dealing with adversity. Life feels more rewarding. People want to draw closer when denial is surrendered.

Astrology at its roots encourages freedom of choice. In many ways Astrology is both and art and a science. It reveals our mental, emotional and spiritual inner dimension. Even our creative power and drive for success can be symbolized by the planets and the zodiac world of signs. Astrology has the potential to inspire us to find the love, happiness and success in the world we seek!
