Coach Boone’s Playbook: Inspirational Lessons from “Remember the Titans”

-

Sports movies are fun, but have you ever watched a sports movie that doesn’t even seem like it’s about sports? Maybe you cannot think of other options right now but let me give you an exemplary option, “Remember The Titans”. Although it has a very controversial start, I mean it starts with a racist murder right? A white person murders a black person and there’s a riot going on. Although the character of Herman Boone (Played By Denzel Washington) is amazing and uplifting as it is, there is so much more that we learn from this movie. Let me tell you this, we rarely get to see movies like Remember The Titans now and that’s the main problem. This is a movie that shows the actual potential of the human spirit and courage, it shows that hard work and love can triumph over anything in life.

What makes Remember The Titans an instant classic, let me tell you why. It is part heartwarming drama, part true story, part action, all of this is mixed with a banger soundtrack. This is the kind of film that actually transcends all genres, which is very rare today. When was the last time you came across a movie which transcended almost everything?

Considering the actual script of the movie, it was an impossible task to actually release the movie. No one was willing to publish the movie, I mean it was a controversial topic. The movie’s writer Gregory Allen Howard was rejected from every movie house because of the race issue highlighted in the movie. Through lots of struggles, the movie was adapted by Disney, even though it was a bit toned down to make it more “Family-Friendly”.

Valuable Life Lessons Learned From Remember The Titans

I have seen a lot of movies till now, can’t even begin to count them but there are some movies that take your emotions on a roller coaster. They are more than movies actually, you become a part of them as they become a part of you. Remember the Titans is that kind of movie and here are some life-changing lessons that we can learn from it.

Change Is Inevitable

No matter where you are in life, change is a necessary part of it. Without change, you won’t be able to grow and you need to consider it. We don’t welcome change, that’s our nature but we must always strive to alter this perspective. The truth is that we love our comfort zones, we don’t want to get out of the bubble, and we just keep letting everything happen the way it is happening around us.

Whenever we go through a change, we start complaining about it. Let me give you an example from the movie, both Coach Boone and Coach Bill had to change, but who handled it the best? Definitely Coach Boone right? This shows that once you embrace the change, things start working out for you.

The truth is that change is inevitable, no one can get away without changing themselves!

Attitude Is Everything

You can be a good person deep inside, but if your attitude doesn’t reflect that, you won’t get very far in life. Trust me when I say this, attitude creates long-lasting impressions, and these impressions can last for a lifetime. You don’t want to become Negative Nancy, do you? Once you lose the respect of others, it is already game over!

Reflect On Your Roots

In this race of life, it is very easy to forget where we have come from. We think that sometimes it is better to just forget about the past and just focus on the future. It is also equally important to reflect on your roots and acknowledge how far you have come. Doing so strengthens you and makes you appreciate your struggles.

Friendship Is Key

You can only get so far in life alone, the need for companionship is real. If there is one thing that we can actually learn from Remember The Titans, it is the absolute need for friendship. This is the kind of bond that can change hearts. Friends will always hold you accountable, even if you doubt yourself. Make beautiful friendships in this world, this is the key to an amazing life.

Fighting Never Solves Anything

Making impulse decisions and fighting seems so attractive these days, doesn’t it? It seems favorable but it doesn’t get you anywhere. In the majority of the situations, you end up having severe consequences and regrets after fights.

Remember The Titans explains every kind of situation beautifully, it shows how fighting and rivalry can destroy almost anything. Fighting does not get you anywhere, and this is what you have to keep in mind. If you have friends, it is you and them vs. the problem, not the other way around.

Never Be Afraid To Stand Out

Have you ever turned your back away from an opportunity, only because you were different than others? Remember The Titans shows us that standing out from others is a blessing, it isn’t a curse. Yes, people might look at you in a funny manner, they may even doubt you but you have to fight that. No one is you and that is your superpower.

The best player will play, color won’t matter. (Coach Herman Boone)

Teamwork Makes The Dreamwork

Always remember that there is no “I” in a team, in order to win, you have to rely on your teammates. Everyone needs to play a part, that is how you can achieve success. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, you just have to give the best of yourself as a team.

May it be a job or anything else, if you are part of a team, then you have to give your 100% to it. This is how you will achieve success.

Family Is Not Defined By Blood

In life, you will come across people that you will call your own, they will be your family even if you are not bound by blood. Through thick and thin, you will always have someone at your side, these are the people that you will call family.

Remember The Titans emphasizes the special need for friendships, once a bond is made, it becomes unbreakable.

 Color Doesn’t Matter

Have you ever judged someone for how they look? This is a common practice, we often judge people for how they look but once we get to know them, they turn out to be very nice. Even if someone is a different race than us, it doesn’t give us the right to judge them. A person’s character and personality actually matter, nothing else.

Motivational Quotes From Remember The Titans That Show The Power Of Leadership and Teamwork

Words hold the power to change mindsets, which is why we want you to look at these inspirational quotes from Remember The Titans.

I’m not gonna talk to you tonight about winnin’ and losin’. You’re already winners ’cause you didn’t kill each other up at camp.

Coach Boone

You listen, and you take a lesson from the dead. If we don’t come together right now on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed, just like they were. I don’t care if you like each other of not, but you will respect each other. And maybe… I don’t know, maybe we’ll learn to play this game like men.

Coach Boone

According to Greek mythology, the Titans were greater even than the gods. They ruled their universe with absolute power! Well that football field out there tonight, that’s our universe. Let’s rule it like Titans!

Coach Boone

Yeah. I hope you boys have learned as much from me this year as I’ve learned from you. You’ve taught this city how to trust the soul of a man rather than the look of him. And I guess it’s about time I joined the club.

Coach Yost

Attitude reflects leadership, captain.

Big Ju

People say that it can’t work, black and white; well here we make it work, everyday. We have our disagreements, of course, but before we reach for hate, always, always, we remember the Titans.

Older Sheryl

I don’t scratch my head unless it itches and I don’t dance unless I hear some music. I will not be intimidated. That’s just the way it is.

Coach Boone

We will be perfect in every aspect. You drop a pass, you run a mile. You miss a blocking assignment, you run a mile. You make a fumble, i will break my foot off in you John Brown hind parts and then you will run a mile. Perfection.

Coach Boone

Now, I ain’t saying that I’m perfect, ’cause I’m not. And I ain’t gonna never be. None of us are. But we have won every single game we have played till now. So this team is perfect. We stepped out on that field that way tonight. And, uh, if it’s all the same to you, Coach Boone, that’s how we want to leave it.

The Best Player Will Play

It’s all right. We’re in a fight. You boys are doing all that you can do. Anybody can see that. Win or lose… We gonna walk out of this stadium tonight with our heads held high. Do your best. That’s all anybody can ask for.

Coach Boone

Coach Yoast: I think this is a very good time for prayer and reflection…

Bertier: Coach, I’m hurt. I’m not dead.

Sometimes life is hard for no reason at all.

Carol Boone

I’m a winner. I’m going to win.

Coach Boone

Blue Stanton: We need a water break sir.

Coach Boone: A water break? Water is for cowards. Water makes you weak. Water is for washing blood off that uniform and you don’t get no blood on my uniform, boy you must be outside yo mind! We are going to up-downs, until Blue is no longer tired, and thirsty

Everywhere we go – everywhere we go – People wanna know -people wanna know – Who we are – who we are, – So we tell them – so we tell them – We are the Titans! – We are the Titans!- The Mighty Mighty Titans! -The Mighty Mighty Titans!

Titans

Whatever kind of ambition it took to do what you did around here, this world could use a lot more of it Herman.

Carol Boone

Now I may be a mean cuss. But I’m the same mean cuss with everybody out there on that football field. I don’t give a damn about how sensitive these kids are, especially the black kids. You ain’t doin’ these kids a favor by patronizing them. You crippling them; You crippling them for life.

Coach Boone

You got anger, that’s good you’re gonna need it, you got aggression that’s even better you’re gonna need that, too. But any little two year old child can throw a fit! Football is about controlling that anger, harnessing that aggression into a team effort to achieve perfection!
