Motivation vs. Manipulation: What Drives Human Decision-Making?

-

There is a very thin line between motivation and manipulation, easy to get confused between these two but today we will be discussing the human psyche in great detail.

Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable. (John Wooden)

What is motivation, have you actually ever wondered about it? We do know that motivation originates in the heart of the motivated and everything else is just manipulation.

Motivation: What Is It Exactly?

Motivation involves inspiring and encouraging individuals or a team to willingly and enthusiastically pursue a common goal or objective. Successful leaders aim to motivate their team members by fostering a positive and empowering work environment.

Motivation isn’t something just bound to leaders or a workplace, it is something that is present in all of us. Our parents motivate us, our friends do, and everyone does it. There must always be a reason to do something in life, may it be in our professional and personal lives, that nudge is called motivation.

Let’s take a look at motivation from a leader’s perspective, here are some of the characteristics that you should know about.

Empowerment

Let’s talk about empowerment, this is the main characteristic of motivated leaders. Leaders who are motivated will empower their employees by providing them with responsibility and autonomy. You need to give your employees a sense of freedom, they need to know that they can handle things on their own.

Trust in the abilities of your employees and give them ownership of the tasks, this will motivate them to be better.

Alignment With Values

Motivation often centers on aligning individual and team goals with the organization’s mission and values. In order for the employees to be motivated, a leader must align the personal goals alongside the organization’s goals, it cannot work any other way.

If you are aiming to be a successful leader, then you need to articulate a compelling vision that resonates with the team members’ personal values. Reach out to their values, notice what makes them tick, and then align that with the organizational goals.

Communication

Communication is a vital part of our daily lives, and there is no better tool than communication if you want to motivate your employees. Needless to say, effective communication is a must if you want your workforce to be motivated, and that too for a long period of time. Listen to their needs and then convey your needs, when this is done in a proper manner, you will start seeing fruitful results.

Leaders communicate the purpose and significance of tasks and projects, making team members understand why their contributions matter.

Recognition and Reward

There cannot be any kind of motivation without proper recognition and reward. May it be any kind of workforce, they need a reason to perform better. Leaders recognize and reward team members for their efforts and achievements. This can include both intrinsic rewards (like praise and acknowledgment) and extrinsic rewards (such as bonuses or promotions).

Long-Term Focus

Motivation needs to be there for a long time, short-term performance boosts are not sustainable after all. Motivation is typically focused on the long-term development and growth of team members. Good Leaders invest in their team’s skills, capabilities, and personal development.

Manipulation: What Is It Exactly?

We have talked a lot about Motivation and we even took a look at some of the characteristics that define motivation. Manipulation is the exact opposite of motivation, and it is used by people both in their professional and private lives. Still, there are some similarities between these two which I would like to highlight today:

  • Both of them imply action
  • Both benefit the person who is either manipulating or motivating
  • Both involve influencing people

Yes, there are differences and we will get into that in detail. When we talk about motivation and manipulation, the end result matters and that is what we will be talking about in detail. According to my deduction and experiences, “Manipulation is influencing others when we want them to do something and only we benefit from their actions”. In Leadership, both parties benefit from the end result.

Exploitation

Every kind of manipulation there is starts with exploitation. May it be your boss, colleague, or anyone in your life, the first thing they do is target your weak points. Let’s just say that these manipulators have a built-in radar for your weaknesses. If you are a soft, compassionate, or just easy-going person then you will be in their crosshairs for sure. Always stay alert for these kinds of people!

Targeting Vulnerability

All of us are vulnerable at some point in our lives, and manipulators see this as the golden time to strike. If your boss or someone else at your workplace is a manipulator, then know that they will target you when you are at the lowest point in your life.

Never ever share too much with people, they will only use it against you.

Avoiding Responsibility

There are different types of leadership styles, some manipulate while some motivate. Leaders that manipulate will always avoid responsibility. Maybe they didn’t provide the exact work details and that made you fail at a task, or something else.

Sometimes they may even try to gaslight you, be aware of these kinds of situations.

Distorting The Truth

Every kind of manipulator will try to avoid being caught in a lie, and which is why they will always try to distort the truth. You will often see them exaggerating the key details in a situation or just something else entirely. They will let you fill in the blanks and then just jump to conclusions which can be dangerous. Sooner or later, you will have to take responsibility for the mistakes that you did or didn’t do!

How Can You Outsmart A Manipulative Person?

Once you can easily identify a manipulative person at your workplace or private life, I would suggest that you do the following:

  • Answer all of their guilt trips while being extremely calm
  • Always set clear boundaries, and enforce them if necessary
  • Focus on their actions and not words
  • Never let them off the hook
  • Try and build a reliable support system

Conclusion

Motivation vs. Manipulation is a very broad topic, but we have learned a lot today. There is a very thin line between motivation and manipulation and I believe that we have understood about it. While motivation seeks to uplift and empower individuals, manipulation exploits vulnerabilities for personal gain.

Whether we are leaders or not, we must always be mindful of our intentions. We must also recognize that true motivation is always rooted in sincerity, transparency, and a genuine desire to see others succeed.
